Mortius1: TV Tropes has an article dedicated to the mandatory adventurer graduation test

I'm sure dtgreene can recite every occurrence in an RPG from memory, so the link won't be of much help.
Thanks for the link, interesting site. But, pray tell me, what is a trope?

dtgreene: There's a game I'm thinking of, but I can't seem to remember what game it is. Here is what I remember about it:
* The game is some form of RPG.
* One of the early quests involves going into a basement and killing the rats infesting it.

Anybody know what game I am thinking of?
It can be potentially anything. Some additional hint? Graphics, perspective, approximate date of release?
Unless yours was a trick to let others name the first game they thought about.

Here you go. For their definition, at least. I'd say it's definition three: "a recurring theme or motif, as in literature or art / a convention or device that establishes a predictable or stereotypical representation of a character, setting, or scenario in a creative work"

Ah, a cliche. Thought something like that. Thanks.

In Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (Playstation 2/Xbox), the first quest given by a bartender is to eliminate rats.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. One of the quests is called A Rat Problem and they are in the basement.
Isn't it the same game where you don't learn about the final boss-villain until the last act, or even late in the last act?
low rated

How about this one?
* At the time of release, the idea of going into a basement to kill rats was novel, as it hadn't been done in an RPG before.
