Some of the fan art I saw for a possible fourth game was much better than what we got.

There was a House of the Dead 4 in Arcades, also on PSN but it's probably delisted at this point.

Hell there is a fifth game with House of the Dead: Overkill which went full Grindhouse and was amazing (even held a Guinness world record for a bit).

Main issue I had with the first remake was that it was way too easy which seems to be an issue with a couple outsourced Sega IP'S as Panzer Dragoon remake was also absurdly easy.

Generally speaking, this is being the problem. While some will deny modern politics get shoved into games, other peoples see it where it doesn't even exist. I just say play what is good and be happy!

I can't see how this asset flip excuse of a remake of the classic sega light shooter could be either "woke" or "not woke" -- how the hell does every gaming comment section now devolve into this discussion?

The real problem is in last couple of years Sega now seems to hate selling their classic catalog. Instead they prefer to "modernise" their games in the most unappealing ways possible.

Seriously if they released an interactive virtual arcade of classic sega arcade titles that presents the games as they existed in the 90s -- players would love it. That is where the nostalgia money is, not whatever this ugly thing is.

ReynardFox: I hated the colourful Nickelodeon-esque art style, especially the way my boy Axel looked and it put me off trying the game for years, but, when I finally did bite the bullet and play it, I found it to be a really, really authentic SOR experience. While I still wish it had gone with a gritty 32-bit pixel art style instead, the game we got has responsive controls, fluent, traditional SOR style mechanics with some nice, subtle expansion, great animation, solid impact feedback and an absolutely killer soundtrack that solidifies the rage atmosphere. Axel is a beast in this game.

That was exactly my impression as well (and I also can't get myself to ever like what I call "Flash game aesthetic"), that's why I was asking.
Still curious about artuurs' gripes, but thank you for chiming in and confirming.
