I'm considering getting this game but I don't want to play it with any of the "Community Update" changes/content.
Anyone know how to remove this update and just play the vanilla version?

The Community Update hasn't been properly incorporated into the game yet. So far, the only changes that do apply are that the icons for food bonus tiles on planets are no longer shown, that you can no longer get planets via diplomacy from other races, and some other minor UI changes. If you want, I can upload the necessary files to revert those changes.

Once the CU has been properly incorporated, however, it won't be possible to play the vanilla version anymore. The next best thing will be my mod, Autumn Twilight, which contains all the bugfixes of the CU, but keeps the gameplay as close as possible to the vanilla one.

So will your mod be playable on the GOG version then, with the CU incorporated?

Thanks, I think I'll just use your mod once I get the game :)

Yes, it will. In fact, it's already playable. However, the current beta version doesn't contain certain files which means, that the changes I mentioned in the last post still apply. This will be fixed in the final version.

Sounds good, Gaunathor:)

By the way; a few posts back you say you have the files that can revert the game back to vanilla(if I understood correctly). Would be very nice if you could upload these files for me, and if possible tell how to apply them.

Here you go. All you have to do is to extract the file, and place the folder into GOG Games\Galactic Civilizations II\Mods. Then, start the game, go into the Options, activate 'Use Mods' and change the 'Current Mods Directory' so it points to the folder you just added. Restart the game, and the changes will apply.

This will only revert the changes to the UI and the make the icons for the food bonus tiles visible again, because those are the only changes of the CU currently working.

Thanks a lot, Gaunathor. And also for the instructions:)

By the way; I`ve sent a ticket to GOG to get some information on any fix to their GC2 package. Hopefully they are already on it.

Anyways, have a nice evening.

Stardock is already working on it. They've released a beta-update on Steam a couple hours ago, which is supposed to fix all of the issues. It's looking pretty good, so we should get a patch soon.

That's good to hear! I hope GOG will get the new version soon!

Thank you very much Gaunathor. :)

Will you provide an updated package once the "fixed" GOG version is out so we can still play vanilla GC2? Would be highly appreciated!

Same here !

Thank you very much for this :D I'm really looking for your "final" version of the mod which sounds great !

Gaunathor: no longer get planets via diplomacy from other races
It seemed odd to me that the only way to get planets, apparently, was planetary invasion... :/
I apologize in advance, not trying to necro, but, has there been an official resolution to this? I see people saying they're working on it in a post from last year, and one of the top reviews for gog's galciv2ue brought me here. I was hoping to start a young mind on this casual yet immersive 4x, but I cannot seem to figure out if the base package is 100% without actually taking the time to play it myself.

tl;dr has stardock fixed the gog galciv2ue package? someone said they were working on it in a post last year.

Depends on what specifially you're asking for.

If you're asking whether the borked implementation of the Community Update into GalCiv 2 has been fixed, then yes. The CU is working now as intended.

If you're asking whether Stardock provided a way to play GalCiv 2 without the changes of the CU, then no. The only way to play the vanilla version (or as close to it as possible) now is to use my mod, Autumn Twilight.
