I was trying to record a bit of gameplay tonight using DosBOX built in AVI recorder, however it didn't work so I guess the function is turned off somehow? Any help with getting it to work would be nice. i checked the DosBOX conf file but couldn't see anything there. I tried to start just DosBOX in the separate DosBOX folder and the AVI recording worked fine there.
When I was fiddling around trying to get the recording to work I messed up so the game can't be run anymore. (Some error message about not finding audio hardware I think. ) So I need to re-install the game but before I do that I need to make sure my save files are backed up, but I can't find them anywhere. I have a full set totalling 20 files but they are nowhere to be found. Where are they?
Anyone sitting on any good answers to these questions?

The saves should be on your game folder.
If you're on Vista or Win 7 try looking in
C:\users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files\gog.com\Gabriel Knight
The AppData folder may be hidden by default. If so, go into folder options and tick the option for 'show hidden folders, drives and files'
If you're on a 64 bit OS replace Program Files by Program Files (x86) in the path above.
You need to back up the GKSG.000, GKSG.001, etc and the GKSG.CAT files

Thanks. I thought "game folder" was referring to my installed folder (program files/gog.com/Gabriel knight...)
Anyway, that also explained the recording issues. It seems that DosBOX DID record when I tried. It just didn't save it to the installation folder. Microsoft just gets sneakier and sneakier with all these folders. Thanks, anyway, both my problems seems to be fixed now!

No problem ;)
And 'game folder' actually means that folder you mentioned. The thing is, when apps are not run as Admin, Vista and Win7, who really don't like the editing or creating of files inside the 'Program Files' folder, redirect saves and such to that crazy Virtual Store folder.
If you go to your game shortcut and tick the 'Run as Admin' box, you no longer will have that kind of problem, cause Vista and Win7 will then allow files to be editen and created inside the 'Program Files' folder.

Oh man, even though i'm really glad it helped you out, now i feel real guilty for not mentioning that before on your other thread. For some reason i assumed you were on XP. I'm sorry about that.

It is partly my fault. I did not think to even look because I did do an original install on my laptop with XP and I had sworn I had seen the save game files there. (It turns out I had...) I then played it on my desktop but obviously could not find the files under Windows 7. Never occurred to me Microsoft could be messing with me that way.

Yeah, this crazy Virtual Store folder keeps messing with our heads.
Anyway, i'm glad you have them back ;)

Hmm I use Vista and do not have that directory. Even if I can't find the saves, is there any way that I can start a new save directory rather than continually re-writing over old saves? (GK1)
