Will this new installation work with my old saves or must I start anew?

If I'm not mistaken, the changes done are the same Collector (from Sierrahelp.com)posted on these boards - so if' you've manually done those, then the saves should work.

Oh no! I changed SB1 to SB16, fullresolution to 0x0, and then reinstalled without interlacing. I guess I'll have to finish my game this way, then reinstall the new version to see what that's like. I don't want to lose progress now, I only have 1 1/2 chapters left...

Any changes to the dosbox config file will not affect your abilities to use your old save games.

Not from any DOSBox changes. If you have used the subtitle patch, you would need to reapply it to the new installation for the saves to be compatible.
