Now just a couple of days ago I was able to play this game until it froze right in the middle of my gameplay. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling it but it tells me it's falling back to 640x480 screen resolution, then that it requires 16-bit mode.

You should provide more information about your system (hardware, OS, etc.).

If you use Windows 10 or 11, I suggest you to read this thread: dgVoodoo 2 might help you with this game.
