At first, I thought it was he didn't understand Grace's attempt at speaking German, or maybe he didn't understand her accent. Then I realized it might have been because of what Graham said to the monk in the KQ2 remake (he said he thought monks weren't allowed to speak). Then I thought he was mute. Now, looking at some of his hand signals, I think he might be deaf. But I don't know, because I'm not very good at picking up on things about other people.

Does anybody know exactly why we never hear him speak?
Any of those explanations might make sense, although I'm partial to the "oath of silence" idea myself.

because speaking words is uncessary for the role and actually works as a good characterization (oath of silence, or simply no reason to speak if no reason) and you have to pay actors more when they speak than when silent
