Hello.

I'm wondering if anyone has a fix for this. When I run freespace which I purchased of Broken old Games it seems to load up and play the intro in full screen but when it takes me to the Create Profile Screen runs it windowed and cuts off 1/3 portion of the actual game window.

Is there is fix, or can I get my money back.

- Go to your Freespace 2 folder
- Rightclick FS2.exe and go to properties > compatibility
- click on "change high dpi settings"
- At the bottom, enable Override high dpi settings option and choose "application"

That should do it. If not, run the Freespace2.exe (the launcher) and let it detect your GPU again. Choose a D3D mode here.

I had the same problem - using 4K display & nVidia GTX 1080.

It's an old game so obviously Setup detects Intel Pentium III and Direct 3D - Primary. I had to turn off "Detect Glide" because it crashed my laptop.

I tried setting program compatibility to XP SP3 to no effect.

Finally, I set my display resolution to 1024 x 768 rather than the native resolution and the game runs perfectly.

The original Freespace and Freespace 2 engine is apparently very problematic with modern hardware to the point it sometimes refuses to detect some USB keyboards and probably the GOG team can't account for every possible configuration that won't play nice with the game, it's better you play the source port using the installer/launcher from the link above (note: you'll need either a Freespace 2 installation or the GOG installer for Freespace 2 on your HDD/SSD for the installer to work). Graphic mods (called mediaVPS) are purely optional so if you don't have the latest rig you can still play the originals (FSport is the original Freespace campaign imported in the improved FS2 engine and Silent Threat: Reborn is a vastly improved fan remake of the expansion Silent Threat but there is an option for the original version under FSport) but with improved all around compatibility.

Hi guys,

I have today found out a surprisingly simple solution to the above mentioned problem (small section of the game screen in the upper left corner with remains of the windows desktop arranged under and next to it) after I went through all the proposed solutions that, however, in my case neither fixed the problem nor seemed to have any effect at all.

Here it is: I suspect it is a problem with the games resolution and its interaction with the windows desktop resolution - in my case windows 10 - so that one has to match the maximum availlabe game resolution to one's windows settings. Anyways, when I set the desktop resolution via right click -> display settings -> display resolution from "1920x1080" to "1024x768" the game started in the full screen displaying a whole picture.

It may be also mentioned, that I have seen other platforms that had the same resolution as me initially and had no problems from the start, so that I believe this is a problem for only few of us.

It sounds like a little unorthodox approach, but it worked just fine for me. Hope this may also help some of you.

Greetings

Just change your Windows resolution to 1920x1080 before launching the game. This error happens when your Windows resolution is 4k or something like that.
An old thread but here is another solution that was not mentioned yet.

Your scaling must be set to 100% else you run into this issue.

Right click on desktop -> display settings -> set scaling to 100%.

I had it on 125 and after changing it to 100% it worked.

I just logged in to say that I tried the other stuff above and it didn't work, but this one here did. My scaling was also set to recommended 125% and once I changed to 100% I had no problems
This is how it worked for me:
FS2.exe compatibility settings > Windows XP (SP3) + check 'Disable full screen optimization'
Or you know, just use the compiled for modern systems version.
