So the whole soundtrack needs to be replaced. Not only half the tracks are too dimmed, but many are also cut incorrectly - the first second of a track is at the end of another. That's why you hear some abrupt changes sometimes.

Anyway, here's what I did:

- Download the MP3 soundtrack provided by GOG. Curiously, even these have dimmed volume
- Open all files with Audacity (music editing software), amplify them all as much as possible - to ensure they all have the same volume
- Convert them all to .ogg
- Move them to the music folder in the game directory

Now the game sounds perfect! I have uploaded the fixed soundtrack here to save you the trouble. Enjoy:

Update: The intro voiceover in the MP3 soundtrack was originally in french, but with some editing I was able to
cut it out and replace it with the english one.

Wow, this is so much better playing the game without the music stopping at random times.

Thanks!
Thanks the devs who made the last patch!
Just got around to checking my GOG library and noticed Fantasy General changelog update. It's strange for me to learn OST still had issues in 2021 since I sent them the fixed version through their support channel back in 2017, half a year after the game was given for free. They acknowledged the fix and graciously gave me a voucher which I wisely used on HoMM3!

Mine were basically ripped tracks from original CD in OGG format plus a CUE file, all nicely configured to be plopped into installation folder. No funny business with editing or anything like that was needed as tracks were already perfect. Package was 90MB in size and encoded at ~400kbps bitrate. Additionally, volume could have been adjusted to personal tastes with "MIXER CDAUDIO n:n" line under [autoexec] section of DOSBox config file, without touching original volumes. Although that's not very user-friendly to wider audience, community pool could have been made to come up with some agreed ballpark value.

Not to stir the waters, it's just funny and puzzling at the same time to see the OST still required attention. I wonder what ever happened to my pack which has 4 downloads. Anyway it's good the fix eventually found its way to the community in one form or another :)
And last I checked the current soundtrack still has issues, for example the intro track is still missing the first second or two. Seems that GOG prefer to adjust the tracks themselves rather than use the ones offered by the community.

Oh well, it's their choice. I'm still using my own.
