So I took Ian with me to the raider camp. I decided to rescue Tandi by annihilating the camp. We both took out one of the guards. Then Ian runs off into the middle of three of them. He lasted 3 rounds. Then his body didn't have the decency to stick around so I could loot it.

Slightly less annoying than getting in Ian's way and having him kill you instead of the guys he's aiming at (tip: never ever ever give Ian an automatic weapon)
