So I bought Fallout 4 and for the last week or so I haven't been able to get ANY mods to fucking work! All the Google pages, all the YouTube tutorials, all the Steam guides all show the same directions which I've followed but IT DOESN'T JUST WORK! (fuck you todd)

I've done the following multiple times now:
1. Clean reinstall. (GOG Offline Backup Installers make this really, really quick and easy.)
2. Delete Fallout4 folders in Documents and AppData.
3. Run the game once through launcher.
4. Edit new, freshly generated files in Documents and AppData.
5. Extract mods into Fallout 4 GOTY\Data.
6. Run the game a second time through launcher.
7. Use LOOT to check AppData files.
8. NO PROFIT! WTF?!

\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Fallout4Prefs.ini looks like this:
"
[Launcher]
bEnableFileSelection=1
"

\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Fallout4Custom.ini looks like this:
"
[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=
"

\AppData\Local\Fallout4\DLCList.txt looks like this with these test mods:
"
DLCCoast.esm
DLCNukaWorld.esm
DLCRobot.esm
DLCworkshop01.esm
DLCworkshop02.esm
DLCworkshop03.esm
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch.esp
PowerArmorAutopilot.esp
ManufacturingExtended.esp
ManufacturingExtendedFH.esp
"

\AppData\Local\Fallout4\plugins.txt looks like this with these test mods:
"
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch.esp
PowerArmorAutopilot.esp
ManufacturingExtended.esp
ManufacturingExtendedFH.esp
"

I've used LOOT as well, which doesn't appear to change/update anything.

Please tell me there's something I'm missing! Because I'm not even gonna bother playing
this game without mods, It's just not worth it. I might even just refund the fucking thing,
although I don't want to.

Please Help!

Do any of these call for use of the Fallout 4 Script Extender, and did you install it?

Also, check each one for any other requirements that might have been missed. Missing requirements don't always crash the game, but sometimes they do, and missing F4SE when using a mod that requires it almost always crashes.

Two questions.

Did you uninstall the Steam version of Fallout 4 completely?
Running two versions of the same game side by side is really not a good idea, especially when not using a mod organizer.

Do you use a mod organizer (like Vortex or MO2)?
Installing mods "by hand" is doable, but not recommended. You can get into trouble with override priority's and LOOT will not help with that. LOOT only helps with the loading order, but not with conflicting elements of mods.

If you do not want to download mods each time, I can recommend copy the compressed downloaded mods to a safe location, so you can drop-install these at a later occasion (for instance when re-installing) in the mod organizer.

have you activated the mods in plugins.txt ?
an asterisk * in front of the mods name is used to enable/disable mods:
*Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch.esp

Small tip, sometimes when the manager or the game crashes. The order of mods is re-arranged alphabetical. To prevent this from happening. You can make it alphabetical, by adding letters in alphabetical order infront of the mods name. So the order of mods stay the same. This way you can also exceed the maximum amount of mods it can handle.

Thank you so much for this... watched all the tutorials, edited all My documents INI files... added their names in plugins.txt... nothing. But after this option with the asterisk... it worked. One again Thank you!!!
Having the same problem here, and it seems that any amount of mods i load into the game just causes it to crash. I might end up going back to the Steam version to enjoy what little time is left for the modded Fallout experience before the 25th anniversary update inevitably breaks everything.

I'm using Vortex as my Mod Manager, with GoG FO4.

I've had Zero issues with any of many mods I've tried. They all work as advertised.

There may have been a few hiccups a couple of months ago with F4SE, but those are long passed.

I've played over 120 hours with multiple mods all working fine (Finished the BoS ending, Far Harbor and Nuka-World so far).

Hi, plugins.txt didn't even exist in my appdata local file. I just created it and copy/pasted mods to it. I added * to make them work.
I know I'm late, but just got started with GOG Fallout 4. First off, I see no reason to insult Todd Howard over this. Grow up.

Second, I had bad mod problems, and followed them with one simple trick. A trick I do not see in the original post:

Add the following to the fallout.ini and under [ARCHIVE] section:

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

I use Mod Organizer 2, and even though it is supposed to do this, the game STILL needs this in the ini file. In my case some mods worked and others didn't. After I add that, everything is working fine.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, I have spend the past few weeks of my life trying to get Fallout 4 running on my android phone through a program called Winilator. I got the game to start and its perfectly playable but fallout 4 kinda fucknig sucks without mods and all mod managers crash. After searching every corner of the internet I overlooked the gog forms buy after coming here I am so thankful I checked because it turns out when I created a plugins.txt I was not adding an asterisk so none of them worked, now my problem is fixed and now I can play fallout 4 heavely modded at about 30-40fps on my phone, so thank you.

But where is that plugins.txt to be placed?
And: Mods come in complete folders. I can't place folders into a txt file.

How i learned modding.
I have modded various games before.
Each time it is a different way and we got to learn from anew.
I don't remember any game being so difficult as this one though. Normally my intuition leads the way to solution, here it fails.
--
So, from the video of the guy you endorse I got the hint what proper version of Script Extender to chose and place where, but that alone does not mean mods show up. I am not using Vortex, so hints at automated installation by that don't work for me. Need to know how manual installation is done.
--
From other discussion here I learn the plugins.txt is crucial, placed in appdata/local/Fallout4 with an asterix up front on each entry in the txt file.
--
The remaining question is, where to put the folders from Nexus so game or Extender finds them, or do we only pick a certain data formate out of their folders (and place it where?) while mentioning their name in plugins.txt?
--
Could you look them up and tell me in what folder your mod files are placed (if done by Vortex or others does not matter), is it under "data" in main game folder? How I point at them by plugins.txt properly?

I suggest a complete clean install.

If you start the game through MO2. And you use MO2 and link it to the Nexus. And download the MOD's through MO2. Then you find them under the download folder under the MO2 folder. I would not know about vortex. I don't use it, it has less freedom, feels more restricted to me.
