Hi,

Fallout 2, purchased here on gog, has very long loading times. They are In the range of 15-20 seconds just to go from one screen to the other. Just entering the starting cave of trials take maybe 10 seconds. Also loading from a save take very long (20-30 seconds).

Just to compare, Fallout 1, also purchased on gog, has 0-1 second loading times (not noticeable).

I've searched the forums but no answer was found, except to try remove ddraw.dll (this did not have any effect on loading times).

My setup is a C2D 2.1 GHz with Geforce GTX 460. Running Windows 7 pro with DirectX 11.

Does anyone have a solution? Is this a known issue? It would seem not, since there is no sticky post for Fallout 2 issues.

Edit: I have tried the following with no results.
* Using the ddraw.dll from GOG's Fallout 1
* Installing Fallout 2 Restoration Project

Cheers,
andymkay

I've got the same issue - though I noticed that loading was much faster in the beginning of my current game. Now in NCR the loading is crippling not least because the game lags like hell (cursor lag and player/NPC movement lag). Already removed ddraw.dll a long time ago. Starting a new game, performance and loading did seem a lot faster, though still not as fast as Fallout 1.

I've tried this with the same save files on both my laptop (core 2 duo @ 2.1 ghz like yours, but with Vista) and my shitty netbook (with XP). Loading times seem similar to yours on my laptop. On the netbook it's a ridiculous 5+ minutes to load a save - whereas in Fallout 1 it's five seconds at most on the netbook.

I completely forgot to post about this, but I found out why I was having issues. It was because my Internet security (Kaspersky) ate up all my CPU power. After deactivating it, this game (as well as other programs) run beautifully on both my systems. Needless to say I've now switched to a different security solution.

Thanks for posting about your solution. As for my own similar issue: I have now solved it by disabling (stopping) all unnessecary services in windows including windows defender (Start Menu-> Run program -> services.msc). There was apparantly some conflict that made Fallout 2 extremely slow. I can not say for certain which services did the trick, my bet is on punkbuster though.

For the record I did not use any antivirus product, I believe I even had Windows Defender disabled.

For anyone else that has this issue, I can only say that 1) Disable (entirely) your antivirus/security product 2) Disable any and all windows services that is not absolutely necessary to run Fallout 2.
