Ive been stuck in the military base after been taken down there as prisoner for freaking AGES, i finally realised you could use the computers etc and take those children guys robes, so then ive set it for self destruct and i cant get out because theres invisible traps everywhere, everywhere i go i just get 1 hit by traps, and i cant even see them so how am i supposed get out?, i cant even fight the mutants because i get my ass handed to me

also the quest im on now "destroy the mutant leader/source of the mutants" fallout wiki says its the penultimate quest? tell me thats not true because ive played the game 1-2 hours and done like 4 quests
That's a real bad situation to be in!

You're not really supposed to get caught (that was in necropolis, right?). By an odd twist, instead of a GAME OVER you're put into a semi-impossible situation/shortcut to endgame.

I'd try to find an older save, or try to be happy I'd at least stopped the mutant threat even while dying myself. Didn't save the vault though.

Oh, the traps are not invisible if you have a high traps skill and/or perception.

Yeah if you're captured and taken to the base, you're in pretty big trouble. The base is best left until the end of the game if possible, when you're high level and better equipped. If you have a save from before you were captured, load it and try to avoid capture, otherwise, you might consider starting a new character. It's not that big of a loss though because trying out different character builds is one of the most fun aspects of Fallout.
Looks like you've found an unofficial ending - sacrificing yourself in order to destroy the base :)
Like the other guys said, you kinda messed up you really shouldnt get sent there as a prisoner. Go there when your like level 14 with Hardened Power Armor, and a Turbo Plasma Rifle and you'll be turning everything to mush.
I remember getting stuck in the same situation on the first time I played Fallout back when it was new. Actually ended up not playing the game for quite a while because of this before finally giving it another shot from the beginning with a walkthrough.

It's a nasty trap of game design, either tell the mutant in Necropolis that you're a ghoul or blast him to bits :)
