For now, I'm using patch 1.3.6 that I downloaded off of Nuclear City. I have installed the Restoration Patch it comes with to re-enable the mutant invasions, giving the game the polished feel it deserves. It made no sense when you enter a town after the mutants invade, yet everyone is still standing around as if nothing happened.
I have recently heard that some people say that they have killed the Master within 90 days before March 5. Doing this will prevent any of the invasions from taking place. Doing so means that they need to postpone getting implants, reading many skill books, doing certain quests, etc. However, I would think that this would be a difficult task due to all those Super Mutants, especially without Sniper or Slayer.
I have always disliked the fact that this game is on a timer. So I would change the number of days in my vault13.gam file in the Data directory to postpone the invasions so I could level grind the deathclaws, read enough skill books to get First Aid, Science, Repair, and Outdoorsmanship to 91%, install all the implants, and get all the special encounters.
How many people have actually attempted a run where you kill the Master earlier in the game? Should I do so? What are some tips to do so to accomplish this? Is there even a point to doing so when you can just modify your vault13.gam file to postpone the invasions?
