This is amazing - but is there any way to edit the scripts or make this work for the new version currently available on GOG, 2.1.0.18? The scripts won't install it because it's not the droids they're looking for, and I can't find a rolled-back version on GOG.

how is this better than playonlinux?

Well, it’s very different from PlayOnLinux, but to say it is better depends on what you are looking for.

PlayOnLinux uses a different fixed WINE version for each game, and install it in the user $HOME directory. It is virtually compatible with any Linux distribution.

./play.it uses the system-provided version of WINE, and allow to install the game system-wide, so it would be a better solution for a shared gaming machine. And it supports not only WINE games, but DOSBox, ScummVM and native ones too. It is only compatible with Linux distributions based on Debian (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc.) or Arch Linux (Manjaro, Anarchy Linux, etc.).

A couple features exclusive to ./play.it:
_centralized saved games and settings, to ease the process of synchronizing them between different systems. Think of cloud saves where you have full control of what the cloud is and what it does ;)
_games installation/upgrade/removal is handled by your usual package manager (apt for Debian and derivatives, pacman for Arch Linux and derivatives)
_saved games and settings persist through game removal, even if the original game did not allow it
_you can at any time reset the game at the state of a fresh install, without the need to remove then install it again
_games dependencies are handled automatically
