Is there a way to speed up the game? I think that was possible in Dungeon Keeper, and I miss this especially in early phases of building the base. It would help the game a lot.

There is a cheat/dev command for speeding up time. Google around.

Speeding up time could be quite problematic in this game as soon as you get a bit into it. I suggest patience - perhaps fixing a sandwich or watching TV but keeping an eye on the game. If the 'good guys' enter your base, you'll have a very limited window before they wreak some havoc of some sort.
