I'm now a level 12 mage, have the first piece of the staff/spear already (now working to get the second piece), have finished the artifact quest to get 50 extra skill points already twice (so now my mage skills are already quite puffed up). Anyway, some things need clarification:
1. How am I supposed to fight as a mage? Use mainly just my spells in combat, or still rely on melee combat? I seem to be doing pretty nicely with melee combat with a mere steel staff or even bare-handed (read later why mere fists), especially if I am able to get an enemy to stuck on the corners or walls, and hit them without them hitting me.
Is there any specific reason to use combat spells normally? They just seem to consume my spell points in a rapid pace on the respawning monsters, and then I have to find a place to rest in order to get more spell points, which is impossible if there are enemies nearby... I rather just conserve the spell points to healing spells so that I don't have to rest that often. Of course I realize that normally you can also choose not to fight but just keep running, but I also want to get experience naturally.
2. Is there any artifact or other tools to let your spell points (and possibly even health points) replenish without having to rest? As said, sometimes finding a place to rest seems difficult as the stupid monsters just keep respawning, interrupting the sleep.
3. So far I've fought valiantly with a steel staff, which breaks too fast though so I have to get back and forth repairing it. Then I entered the Ice Fortress and encountered an Ice Golem. Apparently it can't be hurt at all by common weapons, so my staff was completely useless against it. I was also low on spell points so I couldn't fight it with spells either.
Then I happened to try my bare fists, and OMG, they actually cause damage to it, unlike my staff! I killed the Ice Golem with my bare fists, and after that I've exclusively used my fists for fighting. Hey, at least they work against all enemies, and never break down (no need to repair them).
So is there some unbreakable magic staff I should be looking for, one which works also against golems? Or do I just keep fist-fighting? I seem to deal enough damage with mere fists as my Strength is so high now that I deal extra +5 damage, even if fists alone may probably be quite weak "weapons". I just need to hit the enemy a few more times, that's all. Wolves etc. go down with two punches or so, so no fret. Odd way to fight, considering I'm a mage...
4. The only artifact I've gotten so far (twice, even) is the Oghnom Infinitum or whatever, which gives you 50 extra skill points. Is there some other artifact I should look for? There's that Staff of Magnus, but does it break down as well, and does it work against golems? How about those -6 or -9 AC artifacts, do I really need one considering that my AC(?) is already now down to -10 or so?
5. Passwall... great spell, really making some of those twisty dungeons more manageable, since you can simply destroy walls that block you from going further.
However, it occurred to me, can you use it also to bypass any puzzles that the game throws at you? Like there are some magical locks that ask a riddle, can't you simply go around them, breaking the walls beside the locked door?
6. What are those marks, bracers etc. for anyway? I see you can equip them and they have charges, but I get no description of their purpose. Are their charges merely spells? I seem to get a lot of money for selling them to stores, so that is what I normally do, instead of carrying enemy weapons and armor to stores. Are there some marks/bracers/etc. that I should keep and use?
The amulets, belts etc. are a different thing of course, as they strengthen my character by merely equipping them. +25 points to intelligence, nice!
