The game crashes at in the Caverns West of Barovia when I enter the portal at the end.

Which version of the game are you running? It is displayed in the top left corner of the starting screen and read VER 1.2A.

Yes, you shouldn't have this problem.
I'd suggest uninstalling the game (you're not far into it, yet), downloading the installer again, reinstalling it (in a different directory than "c:\program files (x86)\...") and trying again. Don't reuse old saves.
