Since illusionary walls and hidden buttons can be hard to spot in this game engine, I found it useful to have dwarves and elves in my party, as they will quite often mention it, if you are standing next to an illusionary wall or a small button on the wall, which then leads to me looking more closely and then finding the thing.

Elves seem to be better at spotting buttons and dwarves seem to be better at spotting illusionary walls. At least I seem to get them to mention them more often. Other races don't seem to mention those things at all.

What are your esperiences, when it comes to illusionary walls and hidden buttons? Do certain classes help as well?

This is a default back to AD&D 2nd Edition rules where Elves had a high chance of spotting illusionary walls and such. Dwarves can do it too, but their chances are lower. The game doesn't translate this well, but it works well enough. Classes do not get a bonus to this. Basically, you need an Elf, Dwarf or the Strategy Guide to know where the secret walls are without checking every single wall panel in the game.

It looks like they implemented it the wrong way around, since my elves hardly spot any illusionary walls at all and my dwarves spot them much more often. So I would recommend having a dwarf in your party over having an elf, if you can only have one of both. When I play the game I usually have an elven fighter/mage and a dwarven cleric. That way I get the best of both worlds.

I just checked my 2nd Edition Player's Handbook. The game does implement it wrong. Dwarves are excellent at detecting sliding/shifting walls and rooms. It doesn't say anything about all of the illusionary walls depicted in-game. Elves have a passive 1 in 6 chance and an active 1 in 3 chance of detecting hidden doors and illusionary walls. In other words, all Dwarf characters should be able to do is detect those pesky pixel-hunt switches. The Elf detect ability is set a passive mode, which explains why it is unreliable.
Talking of elves, is it true that you can't resurrect them at all in this game? The manual says the raise dead scrolls don't work on them but are there other means? That seems like one hell of a drawback.
There are no other means. Besides from Powerword Reload you only have Raise Dead, which doesn't work on elves.
