As a life-long fan of the Eye of the Beholder series, I was thrilled to find that I had missed these two games which take place in the Ravenloft campaign setting, however, upon starting the game, I realized there is very little information on the internet (or anywhere that is immediately obvious in the manual) that tells you how to survive for more than twenty seconds in the game world.
Here's what the game SHOULD tell you before they turn you loose into the incredible world of Ravenloft:
MOVEMENT
Use the numeric keypad to move around
MENUS AND OPTIONS
If you're looking for a Menu, Game Options, etc., move the mouse to the top of the screen. A drop down bar will appear.
DON'T EVER PRESS THE SPACE BAR!!
Space Bar shifts the game interface into what I will call "Mouse Movement Mode." This makes it so that moving the mouse will move your characters, and as a result, make you completely unable to attack or interact with the rest of the interface.
CLICK ON THE ENEMY TO ATTACK!!!
Coming to this game from Eye of the Beholder, I kept clicking the character weapons in the interface to swing at an enemy, which works, but is way too slow to keep pace with the speed at which the enemy attacks you. Likewise, pressing Space Bar (which in EoB would cycle through and trigger your available attacks) just puts you into Mouse Movement Mode and gets you killed quickly.
DOORS
Opening doors doesn't seem like it should be a challenge, except that every door or trap door you encounter in the first few minutes requires pressing a hidden stone on a nearby wall to open.
After discovering these things, I was finally able to kill a couple enemies and progress to the second screen of the game. As I discover more issues and their solutions, I will continue to post them here.
Cool game, but the barrier to entry here is ridiculous.
Stick with it. You are not alone.
