I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, when I try to open the game, all I get is a black window flashing briefly then vanishing. I've tried changing the compatibility and editing the registry and other things I've seen suggested, and I notice other people are having the same problem.

Is there any info about my system that might help find the issue and fix it? I had run the game successfully from a CD previously, but I bought it from GOG because I liked the idea of having that version, but it's looking like I'll have to go back to the CD version :/

Some stuff you can try from the keeper klan forum:

Try to rename the GOG exe (DKII_dx.exe) to DKII.exe (rename the vanilla DKII.exe to DKII.exe.bak before), to enable the windows compatiblity shim support (whcih looks for filenames).

The parameter "-32bitdisplay" might help. Create a text file, copy this in "DKII.exe" -32bitdisplay put a line break (return key) on the end. Save the file. Rename the file to a BAT ending. Now you can execute the file with double click, and DKII is started with the parameter. (more parameters are here http://keeperklan.com/threads/681-Command-Lines-List)
(Someone recommended this command line parameters: "DKII.exe -softwarefilter -32bitdisplay -32bittextures -enablebumpmapping -enablebumpluminance" )

Third, you can try to lower the Hardware Acceleration. (XP: Under Desktop-> Settings -> advanced -> Troubleshooting -> Hardware Acceleration to lower it by 4 ticks.)

fourth, try the registry hacks again, for me several times switching the modes was making a difference (some strange persistence of some Widnows shims?).

Fifth, set the core affinity for DKII.exe on startup. The sysinternal tool Psexec is the solution for XP, vista and 7 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/827754/how-to-set-processor-affinity-from-batch-file-for-windows-xp).

Sixth: GPU setting "Antialiasing Mode - Override any application Settings. " -> consistent blackscreen (http://keeperklan.com/threads/1212-Dungeon-Keeper-II-How-I-got-it-running-with-Hardware-Acceleration-turned-on-in-win7), there is also the report for deactiving "threaded optimization" helps
