Anyone know if you buy this game, will you be able to do multiplayer with someone else in the same household?

I remember being able to "play cooperatively" with my girlfriend (wife now) and we enjoyed the co-operative play turning into a frag match. But my fear is that the old multiplayer setup doesn't carry over into modern networking, so I wanted to get confirmation before I bought it. (not really interested in it other than for multiplayer action)

Should work fine. GOG bundled the game with DOSBox, which handles the IPX protocol over modern TCP/IP connections. They even made a little utility to launch games as a client or server (you need at least one server running for DOSBox multiplayer).
You could just use the WAD files from the Doom games with a source port designed for multiplayer, like Zandronum.
Bumping this to see if we are alone in having problems with multiplayer.

We have 4 identical i5-4690 Win7 machines, Cat 6 (about 15') into a 1GB router.

Any one machine works fine. Add the second, and there is a tiny amount of lag. By the time we add the 4th machine, it's terrible. Virus scanners off, background processes turned off, so far as I know.

I still have an old 486DX2-66 and 2 Pentium something or others, running through 10BaseT, and there's no noticeable lag at all.

Any suggestions?

I just bought it here at GOG during the sale, so it's DOSBox.

You can still use the WAD files with a source port, though, hence why mk47at asked if you were using one. All you need are the WAD files for the games, e.g. doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad, plutonia.wad, the source port files are freely available for download.

It is recommended to use a source port rather than emulation via DOSBox, and there are many you can choose from. Personally, I use GZDoom, but some others are ZDoom, Zandronum, Chocolate Doom, Doomsday Engine. There are many source ports for Doom.
All of them should work for LAN play. Odamex and Zandronom have a client/server based netcode which has some benefits for online play.
I'm attempting LAN multiplayer with Doom II. I need instructions/tips on how to do this.
