I created a game, set it on Direct Connection. Friend tries to join, everything hangs. Tried Hamachi LAN, he can't find me in-game.

Any step-by-step guide would be immensely appreciated. Thanks.

Apparently you have to load a single player game and then join a game for it to work properly.
