Divine Divinity is one of the best effort to put back the RPG into the actionRPG genre, that had seriously gone missing with Diablo and its clones.
Though the world is a tad static, it reminds strongly of Ultima in the way attention was paid to detail and how alive and true it feels (and how much useless items you can pick up if you want).
However, it lacks an equivalent moral streak of Ultima (V-VII), and the philosophical approach. The ways you complete a quest may make up for that to you.
The action part is smooth, strongly enjoyable, except for the times you want to track back a bit (which tends to get tedious). inventory is limited, and money can become scarce, but the pyramids are there mostly to bring out the loot... or teleport you away from that big scary mob and the boss it protects.
The quests are intelligently written, always with some surprise or neat sideway into them. The beginning of the game lacks a bit in intencives (after the get out of that village 'quest') nut soon make up for what, and you have mostly an open world to play with for quite some time.
Dialogs are good (in the original german edition), and give life to the characters.
The music is nice, and you do what you want with your character development.
My strongest regret is the textures, the grassy and woody ones tends to hurt my eyes... But not so bad as to prevent playing.
Definitely a favorite.
