I went to Mitox's camp after General Alix tasks me with helping him, yet when I get to the camp a few mages appear and brainwash the entire camp to attack me! I haven't tried fighting through them all because it usually ends with me being chased by a dozen soldiers (and some nearby orcs) but I fear he gets brainwashed as well. The one walkthrough I read makes no mention of this event, so have somehow messed something up to invalidate the quest/

That's not Mitox's camp but the soldier's camp. Mitox's camp is located to the east from this region. Use your "A" key to show the map, a red flag should indicate the location of Mitox.

East of the mind control camp, you will find Mitox at the store. See attached image
Edit: Same thing happened to me on my first game . . . =^ )

It's okay to kill all the soldiers at this camp, though not necessary. And you can come back when you are stronger to deal with them. It does give you good experience points. As others have mentioned, there is a red flag where General Mitox is. Or he can just be wandering right outside his building, then you follow him in. Hope this helps.
