I've played through four times now, I think. I decided this time to go lone wolf. I expected that as soon as I selected "lone wolf", the other character would disappear (and wondered how the story line could handle this) but, I have a companion as per usual. So, what exactly does "no companion" mean? Will we part ways at some point? Will I just be limited to a single add-on character (or none?)?

OK; it didn't take long to become apparent. One cannot have one of the add-on characters.

There are always the 2 main characters. Each one that takes Lone Wolf reduces the maximum party size by one. With 1 Lone Wolf you can still recruit / hire other characters, but can only have 1 in the party at a time; with 2 Lone Wolves, you could not have anyone else join at all.

The companions are the 4 NPCs you can recruit after you get to town.

Interesting; your reply didn't show up until after I edited but your reply was three hours prior to that edit. Anyway, now I can mark a best answer :)
