I had difficulty getting by Josephina, it was game ending for me, you can't recruit the Elf till you get past her.
If the game crashes the instant you close the dialog, you probably can't get by her and that may be a Vista thing. On XP, I had a few seconds to fight the dwarfs (really orcs so . . . much tougher to defeat) and then she attacked . . . spiked me . . .which killed me instantly.
I was fighting as a warrior and found two ways to get by her, one was a cheat the other legit. Both ways, I set the resolution to 640 x 480, seems the lower resolution and the pillar between you and her makes her wait before attacking you directly, if she is not on-screen, her attacks are fewer and less often. At 1280 x 1024 she was on me immediately and full force. If you can see her . . . she can see you and she will attack. Dispatching the Dwarfs becomes your first priority before attacking her either way.
Be aware of the fact that while pressing the Control key, you can't drink a potion (with a hot key).. . . forget the control key . . . you are surrounded by enemies, pressed against a wall and you need potion via the F key you have linked to the heal potion more than you need to hit the closest enemy . . they are all close . . .=^ ) . . . so, I left clicked (right-clicked with shadow potion) and F-1 constantly to dispatch all the dwarfs in both cases. She still spawns a knight but I ignored him and concentrated my attack on her.
The cheat was to dupe 100 or so super potions to keep yourself alive long enough to kill her using freeze and a poison weapon. After all the Dwarfs were gone you can focus on just her and once you mange to freeze her and constantly hit her with a poison weapon, she will go down. She blinds you so you have to have enough life to withstand her attack until you can freeze her.
The legit way, which may only work for the warrior was to immediately press a hot key for super shadows (might have done that before going down, can't remember). It seems that being invisible . . she won't attack you at all since she can't see you. Usually if you are invisible and strike an enemy . . . you become visible. . with a warrior . . you can use your special move without becoming visible. Have plenty of super shadow and heal potion anyway. Take out the Dwarfs, who can't see you either, than Josephina. If you use left click, she will be on you with full force so stay invisible, keep your life force full, hack away using right click.
The strategy above worked for me, hope it works for you, it allowed me to recruit the Elf and finish the game. I used the Shadow method in the Land of the Dead on her and Moriendor since they both blind you and make it really hard to defeat them. I started using the shadow potion and special move allot after my first encounter with Josephina.
Edit: The warrior's special move requires lots of Stamina, so have plenty of that as well. I saved at every opportunity, I use the S key instead of quicksave as it seemed to give less save errors for me. You can pause at any time as well.
