sometimes i get a second of white noise when i start a dialouge with an npc. not sure if its botched speech or not.
anybody got any idea what could be wrong?

Try running the game in Win98 compatibility mode; IIRC that sets the game to run on a single core, which usually fixes this static problem some people have had (Sound crackling).

An update for DD and BD is imminent (as soon as tomorrow), though I don't know if this particular issue was fixed.

nothing really seems to fix it.
will i miss anything important that isnt relayed in text?

You will not miss anything. Whenever NPCs speak in conversations the text is displayed, as well.

Mostly out of curiosity, have you noticed this happening in cutscene conversations (like meeting some of the healers or exiting Aleroth for the first time), or just when you start a conversation? Depending how often this happens, you may not have encountered enough cutscene conversation to tell if there is a difference, or not.

thanks everyone for taking the time to chat :)

im getting some chat for sure. just occasional noise. often when i start a dialogue and sometimes just out of nowhere.

would like to fix it but happy to play on and ignore the problem to be honest. its all good
i get a nice crunch when i throw furniture through skeletons and thats what matters.

Do you have a multi-core system?
I've got a quad in mine and using RunFirst:http://www.activeplus.com/products/runfirst
fixed it for me. Alternatively you can just change the CPU affinity to a single core.

I tried win98 compatibility and this was the only thing that fixed it.

hi i tried running as single core to no avail.
it seems to be the music that is causing most issues. i get the sound when i got up stairs into new area often.

all in all its not too bad. thanks for everyone help so far.

I had the same issue and I tried something else: lowering the audio settings. I use a Realtek soundcard, but if you don't have one you should find this somewhere in the Sound parameters. Lowering it to "DVD" (24bits, 48.000Hz) seems to do the trick (I had a similar issue with Cryostasis, and it solved it too).

was that with xp? i dont have an option for "dvd"
checked my soundcard settings too (realtek HD)

I don't have the same display (at all!). I would have a look in the Mixer tab however. My driver version is 6.0.1.6662. Maybe your driver isn't up to date (or maybe it's mine!).

Ok, let's try with Windows directly then : Control Panel => sound => right-click on your speakers => proprieties => advanced statistics => then select the format.

In XP, right click on the Volume speaker icon in the Task Bar and select 'Adjust Audio properties' (or you can go to the Control Pannel and open Sounds and Audio Devices). In the Audio tab hit the Advanced button for your sound card, and switch to the Performance tab. Lowering the quality or lowering/disabling hardware sound acceleration may help.
