I've kind of run into a snag fighting tougher enemies, since for some reason the freeze spell doesn't seem to work properly anymore.

I first noticed it fighting the sorcerer in the axe of stone quest. I try to freeze him with the level 5 version of the spell, but while the freezing animation plays it doesn't actually do anything. So it looks like he's a chunk of ice jittering around on the screen, but keeps attacking.

Tried it on a couple other enemies in the dark forest area and the same thing occurs.

Now the way I figure it is that either the freeze effect is not working properly, or I'm trying to cast it on something that resists the spell but the animation plays anyway. So either way it seems like it's a glitch but I thought I'd ask.

From what I recall, the really tough elite foes, don't get frozen, just slowed down. Are you saying it's not even doing that. I found I had to really spam the elite orcs with freeze in order to kill them.
According to the information on this page high spiritual resistance can negate the effects. It also suggests it won't stop attacks from ranged enemies and casters.

There are some alternate spell suggestions here
There are some of the boss characters, Josephina and Moriendor especially, that resist the freeze spell. Any critter with high spiritual resistance will also be less affected by the frost spell when you cast it.

However, a weapon with frost will freeze both, in my experience, as a weapon with frost seems to ignore any resistances from any character. I don't want to say frost weapons are broken but they seem to be the exception when fighting the bosses. I look for a sword with frost and a low recoup time but there are others like frost axes etc. (see attached image) The axes have a longer recoup time so you get less strikes but with frost even they will wear down a boss. I look for frost weapons constantly during game play, replacing a weaker frost weapon with a stronger frost weapon having a frost weapon in my inventory always.

If your character is a Warrior, again with bosses such as Josephina and Moriendor especially, I suggest a frost weapon and using the warrior's special move while invisible. The warrior can attack while invisible by right clicking (making the Special Move the active skill to use it )which is very helpful against the bosses. Josephina and Moriendor tend to blind you and move around a lot so being invisible and using a frost weapon gives you an advantage. One left click will make you visible and remove your advantage so be sure to only right click. Use a Shadows potion to become invisible. The Survivor and Mage cannot use this method as their special moves are different.

Reading your description, It sounds like you may have some slight graphics problems. If your OS is Vista / Win 7 make sure you have right clicked the game shortcut, clicked Properties, the Compatibility tab and check marked "Run this program as an administrator". Also check "Disable desktop composition" and "Disable visual themes". Doing these steps can sometimes help with graphic glitches when running DD on Vista or Win 7. . . =)

whee necromancy but I got sidetracked playing DD after finishing the council of seven stuff and only came back to it this week (beat it this morning actually).

Weapons with the freeze property worked fine, it's just the spell that was screwed up and just applying the graphical effect (so for instance Moriendor ended up a frog in an ice cube sliding across the floor) but not stopping them in place. And I had tried it on a pretty wide variety of creatures too.

My only guess to what happened is that I had a ring with +1 Freeze spell on it, maybe it caused some sort of overflow error. Especially since I noticed it not long after talking with the dwarf king and you get stripped naked and then have all your equipment stuffed back on randomly, maybe having it taken off or put back on screwed up the spell?

Oh well no need to worry about this now.
