In the original game, this was a level-1 crafting exercise; combine boots (*any* boots) and nails, and you'd get non-slip boots that let you walk on ice without falling all the time.

As far as I can tell in various notes and comments, this should still be working, but it *doesn't* ...
I have my crafting guy at Crafting L5, but when I try to combine boots and nails, I get a question mark, with a popup comment saying "this might work, but needs higher level crafting". Well, as far as I know, *no* skill requires higher than L5, and this particular exercise previously worked at crafting L1.

Is there any solution to this problem?? I'm going to be going to the ice world pretty soon, and without the non-slip boots, the level is almost unplayable...

Level 5 crafting should be enough to combine 9 inch nails and boots. Are both items in the crafter's inventory, and the crafter selected as leader? Did you try different boots?
Are you using any mods?

ummm... okay, mea culpa. If I put both nails and boots in the crafters inventory, then this works fine!
I didn't think to try this, because *most* skill-based operations (identifying inventory, etc), allow me to do the operations without having to transfer inventory to the skilled party member. I honestly didn't consider that crafting might be different!!

Thank you, Sir Dragon Knight, that works very nicely !!
