Hey! I bought Divine Divinity a couple of days ago and have been playing it without a hitch until today. When I exited the game last time, for some reason my computer glitched and did an auto-restart. Now whenever I try to load the game, the opening screen comes up and the sword-loading bar fills, but then the game just sits there and does nothing with the sword bar just istting there. So I can't even get the main menu to come back on any more. Is there a way to fix this? Or do I need to do a fresh install?

What are your system specs and what OS are you running? Also have you tried some of the standard compatibility settings if running vista/win7?
The compatibility options can be accessed by right clicking the games shortcut, going to properties and then the compatibility tab. Try running the game as admin and with windows xp compatibility and if that does not fix it try some other settings.

Alt-Tab out of the load screen and make sure there are no consent dialogs waiting for you.
Sorry, should have given you my relevant system specs. Here you go:
WIndows VIsta 32-bit, latest SP
2x ATI Radeon HD3870s crossfired
AMD Athalon 64 X2 6400+
4GB DDR2 RAM
320GB HD
Tried compatibility mode, running as administrator, and alt-tab (not really an issue, I disabled the User Account Controls a long time ago), but nothing's changing.

Have you tried running it with the second video card disabled ?
You could try running on a single cpu core and turning one of the graphics cards off as well, its a long shot especially if it was running fine with those on before. Also a reinstall wouldn't hurt if you had it installed to program files I highly advise installing to a different directory like C:\Games. Even with uac turned off vista can be funny about programs trying to modify themselfs or write to the program files folder.

Since your system crashed while playing . . . and now won't go past the start screen . . I believe you have a corrupted game. I would backup my existing save files, uninstall the game and reinstall . . . just to eliminate dealing with corrupted files. I would try to open the save files with the new install hoping they will play.
DD is fairly old and you are playing with a lot of horsepower so it may be more than you need for DD. Is it safe to assume that you installed by right clicking the setup.exe, clicked "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog and on the game shortcut, on the Compatibility tab, checked "Run this program as an administrator'?
You might consider trying the AMD Dual Core Optimizer on your system. It helped my laptop with some graphic problems.
If you have the same problem again you might try playing without crossfire?? Hope this helps . . .=)

Sorry Ralackk, I thought you were off line . . .=)
Edit: The optimizer has no interface, just installs and runs in the background, it can be uninstalled via control panel.

No need to apologise, just because I troll these forums alot doesn't mean other people can't throw their ideas in, Whatever gets the problem solved and the game running.

lol . . . keep it up, your advice has helped me on several occasions . . . =)
Guess it was a corrupted version. A clean install fixed the problem. Lost my savegames though, the new install didn't like the backups. Thanx guys.

Sorry to hear you lost your saves, most reinstalls will read saves. Makes me think it might have had a problem from the begining so it may be better than ever . . .=)

Where did you have it installed orginally and where did you reinstall it to? If you had it in program files to begin with then I think the saves need to go in the games actual folder if you installed it to somewhere else like C:\games.
When i try to start, i get the message that DD cannot start becouse of a problem and that i will be informed if this changes? Any news or word on the reason for this?

Try starting the configuration program directly from the install folder (..\Divine Divinity\configtool.exe), by right clicking and running as administrator. After setting the game resolution and clicking on 'Apply & Close', does that (after a few second delay) start the game?
By default the div.exe program file should be set to run as administrator... you can try right clicking the executable, select Properties, switch to the Compatibility tab and try different compatibility modes, though.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before trying to start the games, and did you do so before installing?

Did you try rebooting, to see if that was needed to finish updating something?

Check out the Steam discussion Crashes on launch and the suggestions and links there.

I cant get past the config screen

One person reported the Windows 8 Performance "Patch" fixing problem where the game would not start. From the post: "it will PROBABLY work for any graphical/launching issues in Windows 7, but I can't be bothered to install Win7 to test it.".
I think I have a similar issue. The game is starting but it gets stuck at 50% on the loading screen, then it stops running. I'm running it on Windows 10 x64. I've tried using the configuration tool with 1080p resolution, could this be a problem? I'm running low on ideas.

SOLVED by changing the rendering system from Direct 3D to Software.
