As far as I know, and going from the Larian boards, the Steam release is the GOG release. They just finally got it onto Steam.
No! The Steam Version has the Version Number 1.006A and Supports English, German und français. The Configure Tool are better than the inoffical patch!
Can anyone confirm if this new Steam version fixed the bugs re-introduced in 1.005 and has finally corrected the broken music transitions?

If so, I really hope Larian re-releases this update on GOG as soon as possible. I need a good click'n'slash game to play until Torchlight II finally comes out.

EDIT: Disregard my question. Turns out they won't be releasing the 1.006 patch on GOG. This is because there aren't any actual changes except support for Steam's alternate language packs. The bugs and broken music are supposedly still there.

So just to confirm they are the same. Is this correct please.
They are not identical, but they are very close. The Steam version has a slightly better configuration program (eliminating the need for the disk version if you want to run it in software mode rather than Direct3D), has added support for Win 7 (though the GOG version will run under Win 7) and dropped support for Win 98.

From a topic in the Larian forum;
...the version on GOG and the version on Steam are different ports due to an accident at Larian that caused us to lose the source code of the GOG version. It's a pretty stupid thing, but sometimes things go wrong. So to make the Steam version, the port to adapt for Windows 7, had to be redone. Therefore, there's no relation between the GOG version and the Steam version, other than they're based on the same original game.

We're going to look at what issues might appear if we release the Steam version on GOG, and if none show up, we'll make it available there too, just to make future updates easier.
I'd get it on GoG anyway, becuase if you buy steam you have to be logged into their servers to play your games. gog will let you play your games even if your internet craps out. which by the way, happend to me a while back. my wireless adapter crapped out and i didn't have internet for about a week, during which time i was completely unable to play any of my steam games. however, it should be noted that i could play any gog title i had installed. go GOG.
I agree GOG's lack of DRM is better, but I though most single player Steam games could be launched in offline mode?

In any case, you would be able to start the Steam version of Divine Divinity directly, without loading the Steam client. The same is true of Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga (though presumably it will come to GOG eventually).
Any updates on whether the Steam version is going to be ported to GoG?
I heard that it may have a few more bug fixes and better hardware accelerated graphics.
theoretically you can start in offline mode. when my internet crashed, i started steam and it said "offline mode?" and i tried to say "yes, please" but it wouldn't work. so in the end, i still couldn't play my games. i still say gog does it better where you don't even have to mess around with that crap.

Steam release of DD (as well as GoG rls) still does not contain fixes introduced by official game patches 1.33/1.34. Use original RETAiL 3CD version of the game (1.0029A) with latest official patch instead.

That's weird, it still works for me.
Sometimes when steam updates it won't work for me until I go online then try 'Restart in offline mode'. That normally fixes it, the only problem is that your normally not aware you need to do that until you can't get on the internet.

Also I was aware that the GoG version didn't have the 1.34 patch and only odds and ends of the 1.33 patch, I was just hoping that because they had to remake the steam version that they would have modified it from the 1.34 release.... oh well.
