Trying to run Divine Divinity in Windows 10 as admin, Windows recommended Win 7 for configuration tool and Windows 8 for the game so selected them, later tried Win 8 for config tool also.

No matter which I choose, admin or no admin or Win 8 etc, the configuration tool does not accept any resolution whether Software or 3D but when tested will always give error message 'initialisation of this mode failed'.

Then comes messages "Unable to read configuration file" and 'Divinity was not correctly terminated last time' etc. Have always reset as the last error message proposes but...

It seems that the tool is just broken as the 'testing' does nothing but leads to error message, as the screen remains the same.

Running a repair on the files had no effect, turning anti-virus off has no effect.

No, you must set the compatibility to Windows 95/98. DD don't support multiple CPU-Cores and that results in sound issues (hissing).

And very important: You should never install (such old) games in one of the Windows default directorys "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)". So old games save their configuration file ond also save games in their own program folder. But Windows denial the games to write their data under the Program Files folder and redirect that to your user profile and the game don't know about that. An when the game look for his data in its own folder it is untraceable.

If you check the box to skip the test and apply the settings, does that get the game to start?
One person with a problem setting the resolution in the configuration program in Windows 10 fixed it by updating Windows (had 'Deferred Updates' enabled).

With the disk version there were a couple people who had a problem with the game creating the configuration files in Direct3D mode, but if they already existed the game would start. Try downloading my config files, extract them into your 'Divine Divinity' install folder (backup/move the existing versions first, if you wish, or delete mine if they don't help and verify local files for the game), edit the config.div file in Notepad (or other text editor) to set the desired resolution (with files already in place, the config tool may be able to change the resolution, as well), and see if the game will start.

You can try using the disk version of the configuration program, possibly setting the game to run in Direct Draw mode. Rename or move the existing configtool.exe and NlsEng.dll files in the install folder, and extract the disk versions from this zip file. Note that this will also reset the game resolution to what the disk version supported, but you can manually edit the config.div file to change the resolution back.

Thanks - this advice was crucial. The game started to work - with some sound issues, but that is minor - when run in Win 98 mode. I'm grateful.

The issue was that I did not try to run it in an old enough compability mode - in Win 98 mode it works, currently running it using Direct 3D. Thank you for the advice.

GOG's version of DD is pretty much broken, so I made my own config.

First step shows how to unlock compatiblility settings.
