As i had the same problem, the game crashes every time I press campaign start. i send a email to devs and they reply with the fix to this problem:

i installed the game to ...games\gog.com\dragon... (as i usually do) but it seems that the "." in gog.com is the problem.

...so reinstalling the game to a locations ex: "c:\games\dragoncommander" will fix the issue.
