Hi.

Just installed under Win7 Pro 32-bit. I have switched on "Run as Administrator" in the compatibility tab of the game desktop icon.

Now I run it, I selected 1280x800 resolution (to match the display), then the screen resizes and flickers, then nothing much happens for a bit.

Finally I get an error dialog that is beyond inscrutable. It says "Error 8", see attached image.

Can anyone help me?

Okay so it seems like this is related to turning off 3D acceleration.

I'm running Windows 7 in VMWare 4 (I'm a Mac user). Turning off 3D is required to get Baldur's Gate to run properly. Seems that not having it messes with Devine Divinity.

Now I can get it to run but the graphics are seriously messed up. I've attached an image that gives some idea of how the textures are messed up. Some of them (like the mouse cursor) are repeated, and some of them "strobe".

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with this.

You might try the "Old" config tool for Divine Divinity. It is not supported by Larian Studios or GOG so use it at your own risk. It has been known to help by setting the rendering to DirectDraw instead of Direct3D. See attached image.

Rename the existing configtool.exe to something else (it's located in the DD install directory), copy the old tool to the DD install directory and change the rendering.

If it doesn't help, run the old configtool.exe again and change the rendering back to Direct3D, delete the old configtool.exe and rename the game config tool back to configtool.exe

The combination that worked for me was to turn off 3D in VMWare and switch to DirectDraw and now all the textures look normal. The maximum resolution offered by the old configtool is 1024x768.

Now that I have it set to DD rather than D3D (it gets an interesting 731FPS!) can I return to the newer configtool and change up the resolution again? Or will that reset things to D3D do you think?

The configtool only allows for the three standard original resolutions but you can set resolution manually as follows (for the GOG release, will not work with v1.0034 or retail CD releases) -

Go to the DD install directory and find a file named config.div. Open the file with Notepad and look for the following lines –

// display width
Width 1280

// display height
Height 1024

Change the number values only to your monitor resolution. Make sure you put the right sizes in as reversing the inputs will cause problems. Save the file and restart DD. If your default res does not display correctly, use a nominal resolution. i.e. A res of 1366 x 768 may not allow the game to display properly, setting to 1280 x 800 will sometimes fix that particular graphics problem.

Edit: the above only works with the GOG release of DD as it has the new high res support (other digital releases at V1.005A may support higher resolutions as well)

I prefer playing at 1280 x 1024 as a higher res makes the game character too small IMHO. Also, the start screen will always be 1024 x 800 but the in game res will be what you set in the config.div file.
