From the get-go, this has been a bit of a glitchy game.

First, I had to run the configuration "test --> apply&close" thing all the time, because it kept saying BD hadn't been shut down properly, even though I did so each and every time. However, that was more annoying than problematic.

As I played along and got into Act 4, I got through all the summoning tests, and then the next level after that as well. But then I ran into the "maze" part where you have to find your way through all those red statues or else get beamed back to the entrance of the room.

As I saved and reloaded, the game crashed just as it was finishing loading. I tried a few prior, recent saves and got the same thing. I went back to a couple of saves from few days before that, loaded them, and found that I could see my characters, but the rest of the screen was black. The mini-map is good, but the main screen being blacked out renders the game unplayable. I even tried beaming to the Battlefield and back, to no avail (side note: the battlefield looked fine).

Is this a known issue with a fix? I am so close to the end, that I'd prefer to finish before moving on to the next game in the series...I am trying to complete all the Divinity games, FWIW.

DCC74: Is this a known issue with a fix?
There is a known issue in the download version of the game where completing the quest near the end of the act (philosophy level) to return an amulet to the merchant can cause the game to crash in saves made in the main game world. Saves made in the battlefield can load, but will crash when exiting back to Nemisis.
In that case, loading a save before bringing the amulet back should avoid the crash. There are a couple of workarounds in this Steam discussion, with several people finding replacing specific files in the save folder with ones from earlier saves (or one of my saves I posted links for), would get it working if they didn't have a recent save before completing that quest.

It is possible / likely you completed the amulet quest before saving and reloading during the test of concentration, though the black screen issue has not been reported before in association with this crash, that I recall.

Did you try loading earlier saves in act 4, or act 3, if available?

Try browsing to the '..\Beyond Divinity\Acts\Act4\Dynamic' folder and delete the contents. The game will recreate it the next time it loads a save.

If you installed the game through Galaxy, try verifying files (I tried adding the game after installing it from the installer, but Galaxy doesn't find it): in Galaxy 2.0, select the game, then the settings icon at the top right (beside the Play button) and under Manage Installation select 'Verify / Repair'.

Is the screen uniformly black, or dark shadows and textures with few details visible?

Try lowering the game resolution. One person had very dark graphics in Divine Divinity on high resolutions, but lowering the resolution was enough to prevent that.

Try rebooting your computer, if you haven't done so recently. If I leave mine on long enough, eventually I'll get a problem with the screen being dark and rainbow textures (just indoors/underground or at night) in DD and BD, until I reboot (though it can also eventually go away on its own, as well).

If you zip a save folder and email support@larian.com I can take a look at it; that will at least confirm if this is a problem with the saves or a system/game issue.
In Windows Explorer you can zip a file or folder by right clicking on it/them and selecting 'Send To | Compressed (zipped) Folder'.
Thanks Raze, and sorry I’m so slow to get back on here. I got busy with some other stuff and forgot about all this until just now! I’ll follow your suggestions once I have time to sit down to my PC again.
