Every place I go to if I get near a cat or dog they turn Cujo on me. I attacked one early on in the game by accident and he started attacking me back. I tried to get away but he was relentless so I killed him.

Every since then they all go nuts when they see me. Anyway to befriend my furry friends again?
I'm pretty sure that the dogs will attack you no matter what you do. There are a few bandit dogs that will attack you on sight, and defending yourself against those will make all of the other neutral dogs attack you as well. So fixing that one isn't really worth the effort.

Are the cats actually attacking you directly, or are you just getting a sword icon when you mouse over them? I don't recall ever having one attack me before even if I'd killed a few. I killed some cows before, and I would get the attack option with the cows after that, but I never got attacked by them, either.

Very directly No they are flat out aggro crazy I just mosey on within feet on of one and it will chase me down and start whooping some human ass.
There is no way to turn cats or dogs friendly again (the cat in Aleroth that you can talk to does not turn hostile), short of maybe hex editing a file in the save folder (I know that is possible with named characters; never tried with a class of creature).
You can temporarily make them unhodtile using the cat statuette =p
I mean unhostile

I used a sword to permanently make cats and dogs unhostile.
They started it.

I did take a look at hex editing to fix a hostile dog, but dogs are not listed in the character section of the data.000 file the way NPCs are, so there is no relatively simple solution like the fix for hostile imps (changing their name).
After attacking a dog in a new game, in the Alignmentmanager section of the data.000 file there are 7 bytes changed in different spots and two 8 byte sections added. Unfortunately there isn't much to mark where or what any of those values are, so in a different data.000 file (which would likely contain a lot more differences in that section) there doesn't seem to be a reasonable way to manually undo the required changes.
