So I bought the game today hoping to play with some friends, but it turns out that they have the steam version, which is currently on v3.6.44, whereas I only have up to 3.6.37 at the moment, and we are unable to connect to each others' games due to the version mismatch. Is this a new development? Does GOG normally lag behind in version?

Are you on Galaxy? I went the old fashioned way with lgogdownloader (on linux, so galaxy is more hassle than it's worth). The most recent patch available to me is 3.6.37.7694_kr3. Have you been on that version for long? From the lack of patch notes and discussion, I guess its new? I could understand there being a delay in getting the patch up on the website in that case
Have the same issue. Me and a friend on GOG are on 3.6.37, our mate on Steam's on 3.6.44. But there seem to be some people on the Larian forums who have 3.6.44 from GOG, so not sure what the issue is.

@nSkuter @blazinghydra77 are y'all on Windows or Mac? I'm on a Mac.

Linux. But for the purposes of this discussion, Windows, since that's the executable I'm running under wine.

Same problem here. The Galaxy version is up-to-date but the 'offline backup' version is lagging behind.

There is an extra step for GOG to create patches, so there can be a delay (usually within a business day, so the Friday release didn't help any).
Thanks very much for the response! Figured it would be along those lines
