Hello, I guess, you need a construction ship, but I am not sure. Did you try anything yet?
I'll just restart a new game and figure out how to set the warning for low fuel on a ship.

If you open the Options screen from the main menu, you will see a bar labelled "Show Message Settings" on the bottom of that screen. Click it to open the Message Settings menu, which consists of two halves, one for Scrolling Messages and one for Popup Messages. In the middle of the list of message options, you'll see the entry "Ship Needs Fuelling or Repair", on both halves. By default, this option is checked in the Scrolling half, but not in the Popup half.
Unless you've changed these settings, I'm pretty sure that you have received a warning that one of your ship is low on fuel, but not as a popup message.
Activating the option in the Popup half, too, should give you are more visible warning (you don't have to start a new game to do this).

I'll mark this question solved but does anyone know if refueling type ships are in the game, or is it solely just sending them to the closest refueling station?
I'm still getting a feel for the game, and this is arguably one of the most complex 4x games I've ever played.

I never tried it myself, but perhaps can gas mining stations be used for refuelling?

I've had Distant Worlds since the beginning. I own Universe as well from Matrix. I'd recommend Das Tactic or Tortuga Power for tutorials.

Okay fuel.

Yes there are refueling ships. That's a tech you have to research.

So how do you refuel your ships?

1) You can send a ship to any gas mining station. By that I mean any military ship. Right click "Refuel at nearest station." and it will attempt to find the nearest gas mining station or space port.

Note: You can only send a military ship to a gas mining station you own OR an empire has granted your ships refueling rights.

2) Refueling ships. - They're not so much as refuelers as they are more like a ship that can deploy to be a fuel station. They can't fuel while moving (which is kind of a pain). They have to deploy in order to get the gas they need for their fuel tanks so they can refuel. Think of them as mobile gas miners.

Now also keep in mind when you queue a ship for refueling, it gets in line with the other ships. First come, First serve. This can also apply to fleets too. Especially for retrofits.

You can also use the design screen to make refueling tankers. I always Include at least one or two tankers in each of my fleets. The star trek mod does not include troop transports for federation ships, so I got used to making my own designs for them. We are talking about fleet tankers though, so I'll take you through that.
First go to the design menu and select "new design". Now select troop transport as the design role. Your fleet tankers have to be military owned, so I use the troop transport to base my tankers on. First add all the components you need to qualify it as a troop transport. You only need one troop compartment. Now we turn our troop transport into a tanker.
First add one or maybe two gas extractors, and an energy plant to process the fuel. Now, in order to be able to transfer the fuel to another ship (refuel). You will need docking bays and a commerce center (goods must be payed for). I usually put in 4 or up to 6 docking bays as my ship size allows. The number of docking bays determine how many ships you can refuel at a time. Now you just add cargo bays instead of troop compartments and you have a tanker. To fill the tanker with fuel, just select the tanker and right click on the nearest gas giant that has hydrogen or gaslon. The more cargo bays you have, the more fuel it will mine, process and carry.
Remember to mine either hydrogen or gaslon depending on the fuel your ships use. Some gas giants have both. But mine before you attempt refueling, an empty tanker is no good to a thirsty carrier.
As your ship sizes get bigger with research, you can add defenses and other components as well. When I get to mega size I sometimes put in a fighter bay. I always found that these homemade tankers were much handier than resupply ships as it eliminates the need to deploy. You might also want to keep an eye on the tankers. If they sit idle for a while, sometimes they wander off and sell the fuel they mine or refuel a nearby base. Also it will be in the dropdown menu when you cue to build troop transports until you flag it as obsolete.
Hope ya'll find this helpful
