This game is fairly simple but at the same time it can get quite difficult especially in the campaigns where you may progress to a point where restarting the level over again is the only way to win. This series I would say is more like a JRPG/strategy mix. You have your main hero and then he can take a party of up to 5 other people with him(or less if you take large creatures that take up 2 slots and also not until you have leveled him up a bit and picked the extra party slots.) You then explore the world map and fight groups of monsters to level up. Combat is handled in a turn based fashion based on the iniative of the characters. The resources are magic and gold nodes you need to take over with rod planters that spread your land.
The series certainly isn't for everyone but if it sounds like something you might enjoy I'd go for it, I personally enjoy the series.
If it isn't something you like the sound of then maybe check out Heroes of might and magic 3. I'd say its a much better game over all and more in line with a turn based strategy game. The game is more focused on large armys then small bands of men, it has resource gathering but its not that bad just run over on the world map and pick it up or tag a resource gathering place as your own. Once tagged they produce so much of a certain type of resource each day that you use to upgrade your town and buy creatures to fight with. The game isn't too difficult to get into either and has difficulty settings so you can start on easy and go from there.
