I've recently reinstalled Diablo and have been trying out the various mods.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned DevilutionX. To me, this is the perfect mod.
But there is far less information on it... it doesn't seem to be as well-known but it is EXACTLY what I was after in a mod - the core mechanics and gameplay of the original DIablo with the quality-of-life improvements, such as better resolution, town running, automatic belt refills, ground item display, and enemy health bar.
The experience running DevilutionX has been AMAZING. Seriously the best thing to come for the Diablo game (IMO).
I tried out Belzebub, Tchernobog, and The Hell 2 but they all had some weird things going on.
Belzebub & Tchernobog seemed alright... all up until you get that one crazy monster who is almost impossible to kill. The difficulty spike on various single monsters is just insane and totally takes away from the playability and enjoyment of the game. Which is a shame because other than that it seemed ok... but quests seemed bugged too. It did have some nice things like a shared stash, but it also had a lot of "new" things the devs decided to add which, you might like, or you might dislike. Personally, the difficulty spikes were the killer for me.
The Hell 2 was really interesting at the start because of so many features... but then those features just really get in the way of the game. I appreciate the commitment and love for the game from the developer, but there is just WAY TOO MUCH going on. There are like over 20 classes or something, you get "perks" and shit with 1000 options. It was all just way over the top. And then the gold you get is so minimal. It seems like a great mod if you have played Diablo for 1 million hours and want to try a whole bunch of random shit and dramatically increase the difficulty level. It's like a Hardcore version of Diablo for those bored of the original game wanting to mix up gameplay a bit.
Ultimately, DevilutionX was just perfect. It's the original game but purely with the quality of life features you would expect from a modern version of it. The ONLY extra feature I would love to see is a shared stash tab so you can share gear between characters. Whoever the dev is for this, thank you, it's great.
