I was wondering if they cared to change this so I don't have to torture my gaming mouse as much as in ye olde days...

Nope, it's the classic old one-click-per-attack. My sincere condolences to your mouse. ;)

Alternatively, you could try installing a mod like Belzebub to enable that but remember that it's not officially supported.

Back in the day there was a program called Diablo Clicker. Not sure if it works on modern hardware/OS though. Also remember it being a tad clunky.
