I see them talking up Battle.net integration but, with the original, I always played my copy with a spawn on another PC on our network.

I don't want internet play, never used it outside of the brief period of time I played Diablo II at internet cafes and it was the only way to keep my characters with me on dozens of computers that I did not own in many different cities, I want to spawn a copy of the game and play with family on my home network just like I used to when this game was new.

Is that still a thing or, with the "updates" added to it, is that something that was removed like how I still curse Dawn of War for pulling the best feature of the game?

The updated codebase that adds support for Windows 10 and higher resolutions is LAN play only. The Classic version has LAN and Battle.net integration.
You can play on LAN via the IPX option in the multiplayer menu.
