I bought this on Steam a couple of months ago and never really played it much because of a number of loading screen crashes as well as trouble getting it to stay in fullscreen mode.

I'm running Win7 64-bit with an Intel Core 2 Quad and an ATI 5770. I got the impression from the Steam forums that the issue is mainly to do with multi-core CPUs, but I tried a number of ideas even going as far as booting Windows on a single core to no avail.

Will this problem persist in the GOG release?

Never mind, I wasted £6 answering my own question.
Hey, I had the same problem. I tried every fix form changing my processor affinity, running with desktop themes disabled, driver updates etc...but nothing worked. I always had the same crash/black screen issue. Then I tried running the game without Chrome running in the background and it worked. I know that sounds ludicrous but it worked for me. I'm running the game on 64bit Windows 7 and haven't had a problem since. Give it a shot.

I read that on the Steam forums (or maybe elsewhere) and it had me puzzled. Basically, I already know that it won't work.

Maybe it's carried over from the late '90s and having to run games with the minimum system requirements, but I never keep browsers or any other obvious applications running when I launch games. It feels odd to me that other people do.
You might try this: http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/#downloads. I couldn't get the game to load at all until I installed this "Kentie's Launcher" mod. Since then, it's worked flawlessly. I'm still in the first half of the game I think, but it's been great so far. I have Win 7 64-bit Pro, with an I5 2500K CPU (quad core) and AMD 6850 graphics.

Ediit: Judging from core temps, it looks like all 4 cores are being utilized. Max temps shown after a minute or so in game are 55, 49, 51, and 48. All those dropped into the the 30s immmediately on killing the game.

This is specifically an issue with Invisible War. I've never had a problem with the original game.
To save on forum clutter, I hope you don't mind me posting in your topic.

But I am also having problems with DX:IW.

Changing my ingame resolution also changes my dekstop resolution.
And I was unable to start a new game, as the game black screens, and no response after selecting everything and trying to star.

Does Kentie's Launcher" mod work for Deus Ex Invisible War?

I'm running Win7 Pro X64 and every-time I launch DE:IW within a second or two I get a crash. (CTD) saying Invisible War "DX2Main.exe" has crashed.
