The original Descent was the first PC game I ever owned, bought it the same night I got the first computer I ever owned. Just bought the D1 and 2 bundle from here earlier. This one is going to bring back memories for sure :)
yeah tru dat. My older brother always had the latest in PC gaming and one day when I was like 6 he left D1 at my house so I couldn't resist. Ever since then I've played descent all the time, especially D2 which I know all the dungeosn backwards and forwards in
Descent was one of the games of my childhood, arguably the first "great" I ever played.
Of course I barely finished it on Trainee back then, I'm somewhat better now :)
when I was 9 I could beat descent2 on ace : D I've always been like twice as good at games than any of my friends or family
Wow, I have enough trouble with Descent 2 on hotshot, yet alone Ace...
Do you use a standard WASD configuration with roll on QE, or do you use all 4 strafe keys?
Or do you not even use mouselook at all..?
I agree. I loved Descent 2. I probably spent more hours on this game than any game to this day. The level builder was also fun, and built TONS of new levels back in the day. Was also the first game I played with my Monster 3D Voodoo card - first 3D accelerator card for mainstream. Came with a full 4MB dedicated RAM! LOL
One of the few games that I have very fond memories of that gave me most entertainment for the $$$ (next to BF2).
That reminds me when i made a level with 2 cubes that overlapped slightly. They had different textures which is how you could tell them apart. Each cube was in a separate space from the other even though they overlapped. To go from one to the other you had to go through the wall.
There was another one that was even more bizarre that my friend made. It was shaped like a reel to reel tape player (except with square reels). But there were 2 corridors that linked the reels together and which one you were in was determined by if you entered it from the inside of the reel or the outside of the reel.
The fun part of both maps is that if you pull up the map screen, it will show you looking right at your friend, but you can't actually see him because hes in the other "zone". very strange but also a lot of fun.
This I just might have to try.
Anyone got a link to the map editor? And will it work fine in XP?
You can grab DLE-XP from www.descent2.de. It's the successor of DMB2, the official D1+D2 level editor. I built it on the code base of DMB2 with the permission of Bryan Aamot, it's author.
Yes, the editor had some glitches, but you could make fun with the glitches to your advantage.
I don't think any game has given me this amount of entertainment especially with the simplicity of level editing.
I hope there's more unique titles like this in the future.
