When I used to play Descent "back in the day", I did so with the Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro. That joystick made all the difference in the world when it came to accurately controlling the spacecraft. Recently, I picked these titles up on GOG.com and borrowed a friend's Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro (USB).
My problem is this. I've tried several different configuration methods in order to get the Sidewinder working and basic functions appear to work fine. But I can't seem to find a combination that allows for the Z axis (twist) and HAT functions to work properly. If I enable these, by choosing the Thrustmaster setup, etc, I get erratic joystick behavior that pretty much makes the game unplayable. Maybe it's because of the shoddy joystick drivers that come with Windows XP, maybe not. I was hoping that maybe someone had already figured this one out and would be willing to put their knowledge to good use here.
Thanks in advance!

Try using DXX-Rebirth. I had the same problem with a Logitech Wingman Extreme which DXX Solved beautifully. It adds some other nice features, too.
I had to do two things. First, I installed the DXX-Rebirth software as you requested which improved the game an immense amount. I can't thank you enough for bringing this project to my attention. DXX-Rebirth is amazing!
I was still having some erratic joystick behavior however so I went back into the Windows Control Panel and reset the joystick's calibration back to "default." That seems to clear up the joystick calibration problems that I was seeing. So between these two actions, I couldn't be happier!
My deepest thanks for returning my favorite game to all the luster I once enjoyed!
