Well I also considered using one of the source ports but tbh I prefer the old, maybe clunky graphics. Also, this way I can actually see the game engine evolve when I move up in the series after completing one game. For me that kind of stuff is part of the retro experience. I'm still working my way through Descent 1, though.
I started out using keyboard only for the first couple of levels. I'm only playing on the second lowest difficulty level but my performance has improved when I finally optimized my controls for a combined mouse/keyboard usage.
I use mouse for directing the ship and primary and secondary fire buttons. On the keyboard I use WASD for strafing (or sliding) in all directions (including up/down). Shift is reverse and Space is forward. Q and E rotate the ship and tbh that's really necessary the more you progress. Also, I turned off auto leveling because it was more and more getting in the way of my aim when I try to "slide peek" into rooms or tunnels. Which is a pretty useful tactic, btw :)
