I may be mistaken, as I had the original version on floppy disks, but Descent 1 always had MIDI music to my knowledge. Descent 2 though, had CD music with an absolutely amazing soundtrack. Great stuff. Perhaps you're thinking of Descent 2?
no im certain it was descent 1 i had it on a cd and i remember the very first mission because i played it about 1000 times XD plus the music that GOG has here is listed as "descent 1 best soundtrack" and thats the music i remember
I remember only the standard music, never heard the one called Best soundtrack. Going from the title, maybe that music played on the MAC version of the game and the DOS version has the music as this release?

Well I can think of two ways:

1. If you're using Descent in DOSBox, you can burn the audio to an actual CD, then create a CD image of it, then mount the image inside DOSBox, and Descent will play it like an audio CD.

2. If you're using a port of Descent, I'm sure there are instructions on the website/forums. ;)
The mac version of the game had fully produced and arranged versions of some of the midis from the PC version, all as CD audio. The game would just loop whatever track # that particular level was assigned. It was one of the best game soundtracks of all time imo, it's too bad the PC version's music is so much less detailed.
OKAY GUYS HERE'S THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Download that "best" music stuff
2. Download DXX REBIRTH
3. Put the music files in the right folder
4. Launch REBIRTH, and go to the options menu in REBIRTH and configure it to play the audio files you downloaded instead of the midi stuff

EDIT: you might or might not need to convert to OGG files. Check out this page.

Sorry about my ambiguous directions, btw. I like the midi soundtrack better ;-)

There are 2 of the soundtracks that come with the game pack, does the Mac version have the non-MIDI music?
correct, the MAC soundtrack has live guitars and stuff.
Hi everyone!

I bought Descent 1&2 today to play them on Mac.

Does somebody knows how to replace the midi soundtrack with the mac one?
Check out the FAQ on this thread. Install Rebirth, then download the mac soundtrack addon from the mediafire folder linked in the definitive collection thread.

If you need any help, post back here :)
Hey guys, I want to play using DX-Rebirth, but I want the original adlib music from the DOS version. I thought it was the CD audio Rebirth used by default but I think it may be MIDI instead. The audio menu has no option to switch from MIDI to adlib even if using "built-in" tunes. How do I force it to use the adlib music instead of MIDI or at least switch between them?
Sorry to be a buzzkill, but none of the addons at the Rebirth website contain the Mac CD soundtrack, only the MIDI soundtrack through different synth modules. I'm asking the same question about the Mac CD soundtrack. Seems the easiest way to do this would be to drop a dxa file into the directory with the CD tracks, but I've yet to find one. I have mp3s of the CD soundtrack if someone is willing to make this happen.

This is the best game soundtrack ever and sounds best on Sound Blaster 2.0.

What exactly do you need someone to do (or help you do)? You have the soundtracks as mp3, and your comment suggests that the game can use a dxa for add-on music. Does the game not accept mp3 music as input, and you need help converting to a form it will play? Does the game not know to play your mp3 files at the right time? Is this something you can do as a user, or does someone need to contact the project developer(s) and get them to modify the game to support this?
