Hi,

I started the Game just fine and it asked me if I wanted to import my demo characters. I chose yes. I then had to select an EMPTY slot to start the game. No old demo charactersave.

Oddly enough I nonetheless had finished about 7 levels already and my old LVL 5-6 team was active ingame.

I accidentaly closed the game, without saving anything.

Now, upon restart of the game I encounter THIS problem when I try to simply start from titlescreen.
The second time I started the game I was NOT asked if I want to import old savedata. (If that is important^^)

I uninstalled and reinstalled already, problem persists.

directupload.net isn't loading for me. Can you upload the picture using GOG's Attached images function? Sorry!
Now THAT was a fast response.

Hope this one works xD

And as I mentioned, uninstalling the full version won´t help. I also uninstalled the demo now. And i chose to delete old savegames too while uninstalling.

Reinstalling the full version brings the same error.

Is there any Firewall or app that could block permissions requested by the game? Are you running as Administrator?

Stop editing so fast! xD

I AM the administrator and the game worked fine the first time i started it. No firewall, no apps that I am aware of.

It just refuses to let me start a new game. I can´t even access the options menue anymore because I have to start a new game from the titlescreen first. And taht is where it crashes.

But there must be a config file somewhere as after installing it again I didn´t have to select my resolution. It started in fullscreen right away. First time around it started in a tiny window and needed configuration first.

Maybe there is a bad link to my nonexistent savefile stored somewhere...

Very odd, from what I gather, Error 1009 is a problem encountered by developers, not end users lol.

In any case, you can try contacting Lars. He's been pretty responsive.

One other thing is, did you download the game with the GOG downloader?

-edit- It is odd that you mentioned the game starts in fullscreen, since it starts windowed for me too.

OTOH I installed the game with the installer straight from the Defender's Quest website. Perhaps GOG added some thingamajig to their installer?

No, not the GOG downloader. The standard Windows installer option GoG provides in the gameshelf.

First time it started in a window for me too. I changed the resolution options and it somehow kept them after deleting the whole game and redownloading...

I am having the same problem and sent in a GoG support request this afternoon.

Played the demo then I uninstalled and when asked deleted the demo save game.

Bought and Installed the full version and started a new game. Thought it was strange the game started me where i left off on the demo. (even tho that save was deleted)

Started the game again and just like Tarantel, got the error: 1009 screen & now i get the error right after clicking play at the opening screen.

Tried the same things uninstalled and installed again. No luck and again like Tarantel the change to full screen mode keeps coming back even tho the game was deleted. If i could find the files, I would remove them cus it seems like that might be part of the problem. (old data not getting removed)

Hope a fix/workaround is found soon.

I also downloaded the game from the gameshelf, not the GoG downloader.

In game shows as: v.1.0.48
Win 7 64bit

Edit I went ahead and signed up/posted this issue on the DQ fourms.

My guess is it's related to the GOG installer. There must have been some tinkering done in there.

Hopefully Lars and GOG fix this soon.
Same here.
After playing the demo and installing the full GOG version the game doesn't start at all anymore (1009)
Uninstalling and reinstalling of the game & of 'Adobe Air' doesn't change anything,
Win XP SP3.
Please fix this.

Edit:
You were right TheLost1: the installer didn't remove the old save folder properly.
In XP it was located in C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\(user)\Anwendungsdaten\DefendersQuest\Local Store
Removing it manually fixed the problem for me. The demo saves even work.
Sorry, but I have no idea, where you could find them in Win7,
I hope the devs and GOG don't forget you.

Just got this from GoG Support:

Hello

Please uninstall the game, go to this folder:
C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\DefendersQuest
and delete all of it's contents.

Please make sure that you use "Run as Administrator" to install and to start the game (right click on the shortcut or setup file and select "Run as Administrator").

You might need to have show hidden files enabled to see that folder:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Show-hidden-files

GOG.com Support
------------

Thanks alot Genoan, simple fix and the game is working again.
(while in the \AppData\Roaming folder I also deleted the entire demo folder)
My bad, should have known Win7 would be using hidden files.

Thank you TheLost1!

Everything is funtioning now!
Thanks, TheLost1, that almost solved my problem.

For anyone who wants to import their demo saves, look for 0kb sized .dfq save slot files in your C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\DefendersQuest\LocalShop folder and delete them. That soud fix the problem whithout the need to restart the game. (This should be done after selecting yes to the "import demo saves" question.)
Just found this forum thread! Sorry I've been absent!

The problem is caused by 0-length save files. The game foolishly tries to read from them instead of ignoring them, causing a crash.

Fortunately, all you have to do is find and delete the files. I'll push a patch for this as soon as I can.

Go here:
C:\Users\YOUR-USER-NAME\AppData\Roaming\DefendersQuest\Local Store\

(If you can't find it, make sure it's not on another drive like D, and on Windows 7, be sure to show all hidden folder: Open the Control Panel. Open Appearence and Personalization. Open Folder Options. Select the General tab. Select Show All Folders. Accept and close.)

And look for files named "SAVE_SLOT_X.dfq" See if any of them are 0 KB large and have no content if you open them in notepad.
If so, delete the empty save files. That should be the cause of the crash. You shouldn't need to touch your actual save files.

If you have found all 0-length save files and removed them and the bug still occurs, go here:
C:\Users\YOUR-USER-NAME\AppData\Roaming\DefendersQuestDemo\Local Store\

And look for the same thing.
