PeterC2: Game originally crashed during a cut scene in Ep 1 Ch 9 after reaching the hospital exit and killing the 3 mobs. Then it started crashing during cut scene after leaving the museum. Now it crashes before the intro video of 2 boy and their grandfather.
Any one else getting this or have a solution?
Seems no matter what you do, This game gets very prone to crashing.
Tips:
Install DPFIX, and the 4GB memory fix mentioned in most guides.
Try all the different compatibility modes.
(Personally, I had no issues that compatibility modes resolved, so I disabled that for most of the game - as with them on they all seemed to break mouse aiming, the frequently suggested Win95/98 modes just cause the game not to load on my Win 11 install)
Set up a batch file to make a backup of your save and run that often (I ran it after every time I used the phone to save)
Handy premade script:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/247660/discussions/0/613958868363129245 So if a save seems broken you can go back without having to restart from a previous chapter.
(you don't have to exit the game to backup a save or replace the file you will load from)
If your save is already broken, you can download all chapter start saves here:
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2320-deadly-premonition-save-file-collection/
Another potential workaround for a repeat crash in an area, without having to load a previous save or skip ahead with a save download, warning This was a lot of effort and won't work for everyone.
Install VMWARE Workstation (17 at time of writing)
Create a VM for Win XP Pro (with 3G Acceleration)
Install Win XP
Install VMWARE Tools to the XP VM
Install the Game (drag and drop the GOG install files to a in VM directory)
(I installed DPFIX here as well but ran without)
Drag and Drop the save file to the VM Deadly Premonition save directory.
Run the game (if it works)
Load your save
I found that the game had no issues running* and did not crash in the predictable spot on the save,
Got passed the crash prone area without a glitch and saved the game again,
copied the save back to my main PC and continued playing.
*I would have kept playing in the VM, except the menus and subtitles were all in a jumbled Font (see image attached).
Your VM experience will vary if you have a lower powered system, or another OS
(I have a laptop with Win 11 Pro 64bit, i5 9300 2.4Ghz, 32Gb RAM, GTX 1660 Ti 6Gb)
I already had the VM setup just needed to tweak the memory for it.
